Dear Beloved Community,
During our time in Uruguay, I’ve been struck by both the beauty of the land and the spirit of the people. It’s a small country of about 3.5 million people (a fact almost every local we’ve met has told us. LOL!) and, remarkably, 12 million cows. No wonder the beef here is unmatched, and the wine rivals anything we’ve tasted elsewhere.
But beyond the food and countryside, what has left the deepest impression on me is the sense of welcome. One evening, Scott and I set out looking for a gay bar. We stopped at a couple of places listed in gay guides, but the patrons were a mix of people. At the third place, I asked the server in my best Spanish if there were any gay bars. She looked a little puzzled by the question before explaining that everyone was welcome everywhere, so they didn’t really separate people out like that. Later, around 2 a.m., we go to a club that Google said was gay. We arrived to find the requisite  rainbow flags waving proudly outside. Inside, though, it was much the same as the other bars we went to: a joyful mix of genders and ages, people simply enjoying being together.
As our own nation wrestles with polarization and division, it is refreshing to be reminded that there are places where acceptance is the default, and inclusion is part of the cultural fabric. What a gift it is to glimpse a community where caring for one another is not a political statement, but a way of life. May we carry that same spirit back home with us and live into it more fully.
Blessings,
Pastor Brian
