Fifth Sunday - A Break from Our Normal Rhythm
This Sunday is the fifth Sunday of August—a kind of bonus day on the calendar. Fifth Sundays are unusual, and they offer us a pause from our normal rhythm. Instead of being caught in the cycle of what we always do, we’re invited to notice the extra space. Sometimes that little stretch of time feels like grace in itself.
Scott and I are spending this particular Sunday at the Wild Goose Festival, a gathering that blends art, music, justice, and faith in ways that surprise and challenge. It’s a place where the Spirit moves in bold and unexpected forms—through a song that stirs your heart, a story that calls you to action, or the beauty of a community that dares to dream of a different world. Being here reminds me that God is not fixed or static, but ever-changing—always drawing us toward new expressions of love and hope.
Breaks like this matter. Our lives often press us into routines that are busy but not necessarily nourishing. Festivals, retreats, and these “bonus Sundays” give us a chance to slow down and be inspired. They remind us that spirituality is not an extra to be squeezed in, but a way of seeing the world differently—where the ordinary shimmers with God’s presence and the Spirit whispers fresh possibilities.
One of the speakers here said, “The gospel is not about making us safe, it’s about making us alive.” That’s the kind of inspiration a fifth Sunday can hold. My prayer is that this day, and every pause we take to notice God’s movement, awakens us to the Spirit’s creativity in our midst. May we welcome the God who is always changing us, and through us, changing the world.

Singing Hymns at the Wild Goose Festival
Last night from 9pm to 10pm, we gathered under a big tent at the campground—about a hundred voices strong—to sing the hymns so many of us grew up with. The sound swelled and rose into the night air, weaving us together in a way that no sermon or speech ever could. There’s something about singing these old hymns that carries more than just words and melodies; they carry the memory of generations before us, and they remind us that faith is lived out in community.
Music has a way of moving past our defenses. It bypasses our arguments and cuts straight to the heart. We might each come with different ideas about God, or about what the church should be, but when we sing Amazing Grace or How Great Thou Art side by side, we are reminded of our shared humanity. In those moments, the Spirit is less about doctrine and more about the harmonies of connection.
Yes, these songs connect us to our faith. But perhaps even more importantly, they connect us to each other. They invite us to breathe in rhythm, to hold the same note, to listen and adjust so the voices around us can shine. In a world so often divided, communal singing is a living reminder that unity is possible—not because we are all the same, but because we dare to join our voices together.
As we carry this fifth Sunday of August into our week, may we remember the power of shared song. May we seek ways to tune our lives to the Spirit’s melody, finding joy not only in our faith, but in the community that singing—and living—together creates.

Friday, September 26, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. Each week, the boys at Generations Group Home are eligible for a weekly "Star Party" if they don't get any demerits for that week. As part of our mission to serve our community, we will be hosting a few of these parties in 2025. Join us for a fun evening where we will serve food and play games. Those who volunteered at the December party had a blast! Generations Group Home is located at 810 Dunklin Bridge Rd, Fountain Inn, SC 29644.
