Dear Beloved Community,
Compassion as Resistance
Last Sunday, we heard the story of Ebed-Melech, the foreign and likely gender-variant servant who saw the prophet Jeremiah suffering in a cistern and chose to act. He did not have the power to set Jeremiah free for good. He could not overrule the king’s command or change the political system that put Jeremiah there. But he could do something.
He gathered old rags and ropes. He lifted Jeremiah from the mud. He made sure that even in the middle of his imprisonment, Jeremiah was treated with dignity.
That is what resistance looks like.
We live in a world that too often throws people into pits. People are cast aside because of who they love, how they look, what they believe, or the truths they dare to speak aloud. In moments like these, we are called to follow Ebed-Melech’s example. We may not be able to solve every problem. We may not be able to pass the legislation or undo the harm. But we can act with compassion. We can reach out to those in need. We can remind each other that no one is alone.
Justice often begins with kindness. Liberation can grow out of care.
This week, I invite you to do one simple thing for someone who is struggling. Call a friend. Check in on a neighbor. Offer a word of comfort. It may not fix everything, but it matters. And in a world that wants us to give up or look away, love in action is one of the most powerful forms of resistance.
Blessings,
Pastor Brian
