Dear Beloved Community,
Tomorrow, across the country, people will gather under a bold banner: No Kings Day. In Greenville, Scott, LJ, and I will join that movement through a local event called Valor Over Vanity, a grassroots rally grounded in patriotism, justice, and care for our veterans. It is both a protest and a prayer—a public act of witness that says love of country does not mean loyalty to ego or empire.
As followers of Jesus, we are sometimes tempted to think that politics is separate from our faith. But in Scripture, sacred and civic life are deeply intertwined. The prophets denounced kings who enriched themselves at the people’s expense. Jesus flipped tables in the Temple not just to challenge religion, but to confront a system that had become a marketplace of power. Every act of sacred disruption is also a political act—and every moment of true political courage is a spiritual witness.
We gather tomorrow not to tear down, but to lift up:
- Valor over vanity—honoring those who served with dignity and deserve justice, not spectacle.
- Democracy over domination—naming clearly that this nation should serve its people, not the ambitions of any one man.
- Truth over tyranny—bearing witness to a different kind of power: one rooted in love, justice, and the common good.
Political action is not just permitted for people of faith—it’s often required. Silence in the face of rising authoritarianism is not neutrality. It is complicity. As Christians who follow a brown-skinned Jewish teacher executed by the state, we know what it means when government turns religion into a tool of empire.
So whether you attend the rally downtown, pray from your home, or simply take time to reflect on what it means to stand on the side of the marginalized, I encourage you to see your participation as sacred.
Jesus said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” But that only works when we have the courage to speak it.
With fierce love and holy hope,
Pastor Brian
