Dear Beloved Community,
Unmasking Fundamentalism: A Look Back at This Month’s Journey
This past month, our community has taken a deep dive into the history and development of Christian fundamentalism—not to condemn individuals, but to better understand a movement that has shaped so much of American religious and political life. Together, we’ve asked honest questions about where these ideas come from, what they seek to protect, and whether they reflect the depth and breadth of our shared Christian tradition.
One of the clearest takeaways from our exploration is this: fundamentalism is not a timeless Christian truth handed down through the ages. It is, instead, a modern reaction—an American phenomenon shaped by fear, cultural change, and the perceived loss of certainty. Fundamentalism arose not because the gospel demanded it, but because society was shifting: scientific discoveries like evolution, new ways of interpreting Scripture, and changing roles for women and minorities all sparked anxiety among those who felt the world they knew slipping away.
In response, some Christians tried to draw hard lines around the faith—insisting on biblical inerrancy, condemning modernism, and doubling down on rigid beliefs. But the deeper tradition of Christianity is not built on fear or rigidity—it’s built on love, grace, and the ongoing work of discernment. As we’ve seen, early Christians wrestled with their Scriptures, with each other, and with the world around them. They didn’t freeze the faith in one moment of time. They trusted that God was still speaking.
As we move forward, let’s continue to ask: Are we clinging to something out of fear, or are we open to where the Spirit is leading? May we be a community that chooses curiosity over certainty, humility over pride, and love over fear.
Blessings,
Pastor Brian
